Alex M. Cleghorn is an Associate with Minami Tamaki LLP in our San Francisco office. He was admitted to the California Bar in 2004 and is also admitted to practice in the United States District Courts in the Northern and Eastern Districts of California.
Mr. Cleghorn is a civil litigator focusing on employment and civil rights law. He represents individual and class action clients in state and federal courts and in mediation proceedings.
Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Cleghorn was a Staff Attorney at the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California with the LGBT and AIDS Project where he helped fight discrimination against, and the unequal treatment of, LGBT people. He was involved in writing an amicus brief on behalf of a woman denied fertility treatment because of her sexual orientation. He also played a role in the cases challenging California's exclusion of same-sex couples from marriage.
Mr. Cleghorn previously practiced Federal Indian law, advising and representing individual Native Americans, Native Nations, Tribal Councils and a variety of Native American organizations.
While in law school he completed several internships including a Judicial Externship with United States District Court Judge Susan Illston in the Northern District of California. He was also a Teaching Assistant and participated in the Prisoners' Rights Clinic.
Alex received his undergraduate degree from the University of Washington and earned his juris doctor from Northeastern University School of Law in 2003.
Alex has been on the Board of Directors for the Transgender Law Center since 2005 and is a member of Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom.
